The Romance and Investment Scam

May 27, 2025 | 1 Minute Read

Watch out for the latest fraud scheme that combines a romance scam with an investment scam.

Scammers initiate contact through social media or dating platforms, posing as attractive and attentive individuals. These scammers build a trust over time and establish a relationship. By building emotional connections, scammers lower their victims’ defenses, making them susceptible to a financial scheme. Once scammers build trust, then they introduce fraudulent investment opportunities, often involving cryptocurrency, promising high returns. Victims are encouraged to invest increasing amounts of money, only to find that the platforms are fake and their money is unrecoverable.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Be skeptical of unsolicited contacts. Be cautious when strangers initiate contact online, especially when they move quickly into conversations about financial topics.
  • Verify investment opportunities. Conduct thorough research before investing.
  • Do not share personal information with someone you just met online.
  • Never ever send money or financial information to anyone you don’t know or haven’t met in person.
